The mindset when designing this piece was to mix both organic and artificial design traits. Normally design leans closer to one or the other, even trying to hide elements of the opposite side. An example being rounding corners purely for the sake of making the product look “friendlier” or using materials like stainless steel and harsh edges to appear “tougher”.
I wanted to use traits of both sides but keep them clearly distinct, not to blend them resulting in something in the middle of the spectrum but to have complimenting features that expressed both sides distinctly.
The Artificial side - The shade is exactly 140mm tall with the base circle being 100mm wide. It’s not the size that’s artificial more so the precision, exactly 140mm tall. Every single time. If I were to make 1000 of these shades there would be no difference in the heights of any of them. Something you can’t find in nature, try finding 2 flowers the exact same height and shape to the millimetre.
The shape of the shade is built up in stages, each being exactly 20mm, 7 in total. If I decided to make another variant of this shade say a bit taller, it would have to be 20mm taller or 40 or 60. It’s been given a structural pattern that I can’t break, to break it would make it too organic. The top and bottom of the shade are flat and parallel, I originally thought about making it more plant like but it went against it. I didn’t want to trap the shape into the realm of nature, since I thought it took away from the paperlike qualities it had.
The Organic side - The profile sketch of each layer is different, there’s no symmetry. No right way to orientate the shade, no front or back. The profile sketch for each layer was completed in one motion, then the next layer was built. I didn’t go back and make adjustments to make the shape more appealing to me. To change it would be to control something that is meant to be organic. I had a plan for the general size and look but even I didn’t know what the final product would look like until it was complete.
The final layer was purposely flared out, this wasn’t planned at the start. It was something that felt right in the moment, it was the final layer and there was no reason to stick within any limits I had put on the form. It shows the end of the design, like a flower fully bloomed. It’s complete.
