The Stone Light (Smooth)

I wanted to design a range of shades with the materials expectation in mind. The shade is made from PLA a bio-plastic, you expect it to have a certain feel and structure. I wanted to play with the first impression you have when seeing it.

This is the Stone light.

This form originated when ideating shapes for the Cloth light, it was more open at the base and was much less defined. I reduced the size of the opening, and it evolved into something that was moving away from cloth, it no longer had that “flow” a fabric would have. It started to resemble something more solid, like pebbles. As if they had merged into a collection to fit the size parameters of a shade. It reminded me of a stone carving, like the marble sculptures that somehow display the softness of skin. I gave the design deeper grooves to allow for darker shadows when light is being emitted from the inside.

The shape is irregular, there is no front face. I liked the idea of the owner choosing their favourite orientation.

This is the smooth variant of the stone light. I went back and forth on the idea of the surface being smooth or not, deciding on the textured surface. I’ve written in the description of that light why that was done. However I couldn’t let go of this design, I decided to make both available. This variant was different enough that I felt it deserved a release too, the smooth surface flows up and down like a wave. The grooves remind me of stone that has been eroded by water, shapes that can only be carved slowly over years by the force of nature, not a tool.
