The Filter Light

The Filter light. This was inspired by a classic home coffee brewer. I wanted to design something coffee themed but I didn’t want it to be too on the nose and it had to be appealing to those who aren’t into coffee.

If you are into coffee you would recognise this shape as the classic Chemex brewer. This was actually an idea I had about a year ago when I was ideating shapes for a coffee themed chess set, I thought back then this would be a good shape for a lamp. One year later and the idea came back to me, I started working on a prototype right away.

I played with the idea of making it very clearly a brewer, but it made the overall product seem cheap. It felt like a novelty and honestly made me concerned over copyright… so I dialled it way back, kept the overall form but adapted it to make it more suitable for a light shade.

Something unique about this light is the difference between it being on and off. When off the hourglass shape is striking, due to the top cone being smaller it gives the impression of the base having more weight. The black band wrapping around the shade has a thickness to it that isn’t hidden, the corners are sharp and have a clear separation from the shade. This gives the illusion of it squeezing the shade to give it that shape.

Once switched on, the light emits from the bottom half. Appearing to glow so bright it illuminates the outside of the top half, the black centrepiece actually casts a small ring of a shadow onto the top cone, a happy accident that I felt mimicked the look of a bed of coffee grounds.

I love how different the character of this light is depending on the environment that it’s in. In a home it feels very modern, it has a presence with the contrast of black and white components. It would be best suited as a spotlight over an important space, a reading chair, a dinner table. In a commercial space this shade becomes much more playful, hanging over a coffee counter it feels purpose-built.
