The Cloth Light

This is the first of a few pieces I designed with material expectations in mind. The shade is made from PLA a bio-plastic, you expect it to have a certain feel and structure. I wanted to play with the first impressions you would have when seeing it.

This is the Cloth light.

I wanted to mimic fabric, the way it drapes over a table or how a curtain will flow.

It creates folds which create shadows. These are not normally hidden, they are part of the aesthetic. If you don’t want folds then you don’t use fabric.

I wanted to add those folds, those “imperfections” back into this shade, into this solid material, to mimic the beauty.

I initially thought about making every fold unique, making the overall shade different from every angle. This didn’t work, for some reason this made the form feel cheap as if its only purpose was to be a copy, a fake. I decided to go with a pattern that repeats 5 times to make the folds. This repetition gives the shape a lot more balance and structure, mimicking the effect a table corner would have on a piece of cloth.

The repeated pattern is not something you would notice from a first glance but you would be able to tell that the shape isn’t random, it gives the sense of intentional design. The final shade has 5 sides instead of 4, this helps prevent the shade looking misaligned with the room.

This 3D printed product is a non-electrical, decorative lighting accessory. It is designed for use with CE marked components.

An unmodified Pendant lamp kit is included in each sale free of charge.

The lamp must be assembled by the customer.
